What is Dermal Filler?
Dermal Fillers also known as face fillers are naturally occurring substances called Hyaluronic Acid which are not dangerous but rather in short supply in the skin as we age. These gel fillers are biocompatible and as a result non allergenic and low risk when used as a filler agent. In the hands of an expert injector, we are able to place dermal fillers in the right parts of the face/body restoring lost volume, to soften and fill lines and folds, contour the cheeks and jawline and rejuvenate and augment the lips.
What area does filler treat ?
Dermal fillers are very versatile and are used to treat a number of areas. These include but are not limited to;
- Lip augmentation definition and reduction of lines around the lip
- Cheek enhancement and jawline contouring
- Restoration of lost volume in the cheeks and temples, relieving hollowness and loss of smooth contouring
- Static superficial to deep lines around the face including nasolabial folds and marionette lines
- Tear trough and periorbital rejuvenation
What does the treatment involve?
Prior to any treatment with dermal fillers a full consultation is required. This will include full clinical photography, skin assessment and review with the doctor to assess your areas of concern, expectations and determine the need for any other complementary treatments. A tailored treatment plan will be devised with the aim to provide the best possible results and a natural more refreshed look.
Treatment with dermal fillers often involves some discomfort. In the treatment of certain areas, a numbing cream or a block of the supplying nerve with local anaesthetic is performed. All dermal filler injections are performed by our doctors who prefer to use dermal fillers that contain local anaesthetic which further reduces the discomfort.
The procedure takes around 30 minutes or longer if multiple areas are treated. This is to ensure an aesthetically pleasing result and accuracy of injection. The treatment itself involves the injection of the gel like fluid through small needles or cannulas into the areas of concern, with different techniques to disperse the filler in a smooth and uniform way.
The effect is immediate, but some patients will notice increased swelling for 24-48 hours so the true effect may not often be noticeable until then. It may take to 3-4 weeks for the dermal filler to stabilize and fully settle into the skin. A follow-up consultation at this time is recommended to assess the results and determine the next phase of treatment.
Are there are any risks with dermal fillers ?
There are minimal side effects associated with dermal fillers. These may include but are not limited to:
- Local swelling and asymmetry due to swelling
- Lumpiness or irregularity of the filler
Rare complications include allergic reactions, the formation of granulomas, secondary bacterial or viral infections (for example reactivation of the cold sore virus), damage to vascular structures, ischemia and blindness (very rare).
Dermal filler injections cannot be given to people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have taken a course of prescription acne medication in the last 3 months, have a history of autoimmune diseases or multiple allergies.
Our doctors will discuss all risks and contraindications prior to performing any procedure.
Are Dermal Fillers Safe?
Dermal filler treatment is fast and relatively a pain free procedure. There are some risks and temporarily side effects that can occur around the injection site such as bruising, swelling, redness, pain, itching and a rash. To avoid a unbalanced fake appearance and to minimise risks, fillers needs to be placed in the right part of the face. For this reason, it’s important to always have dermal fillers injected by an experienced cosmetic practitioner.
At Rejuvface CosmetiX our cosmetic doctors will know the best types fillers to use for specific areas of treatment which will mean in better results and fewer risks
Can I have fillers and still look natural?
Yes! In fact, expertly injected filler treatments should look natural and the difference will be subtle. Our goat at injectable effects is to give you a fresh, rejuvenated look.

Treatment Follow Up
A top-up treatment within 3-4 weeks of the initial dermal filler treatment may be necessary to achieve optimal correction and results. Although results from dermal fillers are immediate the end result is not really evident until this time as the filler ‘integrates’ into the skin. It can also take this long for swelling to settle so it is important to wait until this time for the dermal filler to settle.
There can also be asymmetries prior to this time (due to irregular swelling) too so don’t panic and trust in the process.
Dermal filler products are long lasting but not permanent. Longevity depends on the type of filler used, its indication, compliance with aftercare and individual factors such as metabolism.
Results are individual and it may take a few treatments for your desired results. Regular review is important.
