Anti – Wrinkle Injections

Dynamic lines which occur with movements of facial muscles can be successfully treated with anti-wrinkle injections which effectively and safely results in “wrinkle relaxation” in the area of concern. Anti-wrinkle injections (wrinkle relaxers) targets the specific muscle group and work to temporarily reduced movements in the area resulting less visible wrinkles.

Anti-wrinkle injections (wrinkle relaxers) are useful wherever there are dynamic lines or areas of overactive muscle and this is one of our most popular cosmetic procedures.

Areas that are treated include:

  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet / periorbital lines
  • Bunny lines on the nose
  • Dimpling of the chin
  • Upper lip lines and corners of the mouth
  • Widened or square jaw (masseter injections)
  • Platysmal or neck bands
  • Gummy smile

Where do wrinkles commonly form?

Crow’s Feet

Anti Wrinkle injections

Lines around the eyes are commonly referred to as crow’s feet. They often form as small creases when you smile however can extend laterally and eventually spread down to the cheek area. Softening the crow’s feet involves injecting wrinkle relaxer into the ‘orbicularis oculi’ muscle which is the muscle involved in opening and closing the eye. Injecting to the top part of this muscle can also result in a ‘chemical brow lift’

Frown Lines

Anti Wrinkle injections

Frown lines or the dreaded number ‘11’ between the eyebrows can often make you stressed if they are present at rest. Frown lines may convey negative expressions such as anger, even when one is not angry. Reduction of frown lines through wrinkle relaxers provide a more relaxed facial appearance and reduce the likelihood of being misinterpreted as being angry when one is not.

Forehead lines

Anti Wrinkle injections

Forehead lines result from overactivity of the ‘frontalis’ muscle which works to elevate the eyebrow and is one of the most commonly used muscles of facial expression. The frontalis muscle often gets lots of small horizontal lines which many people start to notice once makeup gets caught in them at the end of the day.

It is important not to over treat this area with wrinkle relaxers as this is the only muscle used to elevate the brow.

Bunny lines

Anti Wrinkle injections

Bunny lines are those creases that form when you scrunch up your nose. They are not a problem for everyone however can become more evident when the glabellar (frown lines) have been treated as there is smooth skin above this area during facial expression. People who suffer allergies often have worse bunny lines due to rubbing their nose and constantly scrunching and sneezing. Small volumes of wrinkle relaxer can be injected into the nasalis muscle on each side to soften the appearance of these lines.

Perioral lines/smoker’s lines

Anti Wrinkle injections

Lines around the upper lip are quite common, especially once a woman reaches menopause. They are often due to smoking (constant pursing of the lips) however can occur in people who have never smoked. The lines form due to the action of the orbicularis oris muscle and appear more evident once the skin loses its elasticity and collagen as we age. However, using wrinkle relaxers in the orbicularis oris at very small volumes can soften this muscle (whist still allowing the lips to move – and kiss) and slow down the formation of smoker’s lines.

The above are only a few treatment areas that can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections. More advanced injection techniques that are performed at Rejuvface Cosmetix include injections to the marionette lines (Depressor Anguli Oris muscle) to prevent a downturned smile, masseter muscles (for reduction of bruxism, TMJ dysfunction, clenching and jawline slimming , the platysma muscle for a neck lift (Nefertiti lift), the elevator muscles of the lip for a gummy smile and mentalis muscle for treatment of a dimply chin to name a few.

Anti Wrinkle injections

What does the treatment involve?

The anti wrinkle injections (wrinkle relaxers) procedure generally lasts 10-15 minutes and involves the injection of small volumes of fluid into the target muscles using a very fine needle. The procedure is usually painless with some patient’s reporting a stinging sensation and discomfort which is easily reduced by applying an ice pack or numbing cream to the area before injecting.
Results become evident after a few days with the maximal effect at 2 weeks. A follow-up appointment is recommended to ensure you are satisfied with your results and to assess the need for any dose adjustments. This will ensure ongoing treatments are perfected with the right dose for your individual needs. No treatment will be performed prior to the 2 week follow-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many Millions of anti-wrinkle treatments are performed each year and it consistently ranks as the number one procedure in patient satisfaction surveys of cosmetic procedures.

What areas are commonly treated?
The most common wrinkle areas that we treat are lines around the eyes (crow’s feet), lines between the eyes (frown lines) and lines across the forehead (worry lines). Wrinkle injections can be also used to elevate or shape the position of the brow and can also be used to treat other areas on the face such as improving lines in the lower face around the mouth and chin.
Why do people like the treatments?
Wrinkle injections are such a popular treatment because they are a very safe and effective non-surgical method of facial rejuvenation. The treatment is quick, safe, and lasts for many months. The aim of the treatment is to create a natural look that appears less worried, tired and stressed. Patients typically find that wrinkle injections give them an improved and refreshed, younger appearance.
What does the treatment involve?
Treatments are quick and simple, on-surgical procedures. Using a few extremely fine needles inject a very small amount of the product. It is not painful, and anaesthetic is unnecessary. For patients with very sensitive skin, cold packs can be used prior to treatment to reduce discomfort.
The procedure only takes a few minutes. The results will usually begin to be noticed after 2-3 days with the maximum effect occurring within 2 weeks after the treatment
Who performs the treatment?
All of our wrinkle injections are performed by cosmetic doctors who are fully registered and experienced in the procedure.
Is the treatment safe?
The doses of the product used for cosmetic purposes are very low (nanograms) and among the millions of patients treated with this product every year, there has still been no reports of long-term side effects to the cosmetic doses.
Are there any side effects of wrinkle injections?
Wrinkle injections have very few side effects and if they happen to occur, they are usually minor and related to the area that was injected.
Some minor side effects includes itching, redness, minor swelling and bruising. In most cases, these side effects disappear within hours after the injections.
As the injection is into the skin, a small bruise may occasionally occur. If a bruise does occur it is typically a small spot bruise that if necessary, can easily be concealed with makeup.
In general, the product we use for wrinkle injections has an extremely good safety profile and no long-term side effects have been reported.
How long will the wrinkle injections last?
Effects of treatments usually lasts up to four months and gradually decreases over time. There is evidence regular treatments at 4 monthly intervals provides better and longer lasting results. .If at any time you stop your treatments, your muscles do not become worse, they return back to normal muscles and to how they were previously
Can I resume normal activities after the treatment?
Normal activities can be resumed immediately after your treatment. Make-up can be applied over the area if necessary. We recommend no massage to the treatment area for 24 hours after the treatment and also to avoid strenuous exercise resulting in sweating for the day of treatment.
How much does the treatment cost?
The cost varies depending on the number of units of the product that is used. The number of units required for the treatment depends on what area is being treated, the strength of the muscles in that area, the degree of wrinkling there and the effect from previous treatments. There is no Medicare rebate and the Government will charge additional GST of 10% on wrinkle injections.
Are wrinkle injections used on anything other than wrinkles?
The product that we use here as a wrinkle relaxant also has other medical uses such as controlling patients with excessive sweating (called hyperhidrosis). Just as an example, reducing armpit sweating by up to 90% can be achieved for an average 8-10 months.
The same product can also be used for other uses such as treating migraines, reducing bulky square jaws and for treating patients with teeth grinding problems.
